Environmental consciousness is an Integral part of the company culture.
TCL was one of the earliest companies to be certified under ISO-9000 ( for Quality Systems), and ISO-14000(for excellence in Environmental, Safety and Health systems). TCL is a member of the Responsible Care Initiative.
Since 1985 TCL has implemented a focused programme in Energy Efficiency, and since 1995 in Water Efficiency.
The Energy programme includes both Waste Heat Energy Recovery, Energy Use Reduction, and Energy Cascades.
This has resulted in dramatic efficiencies: for example, expressed as energy cost, the per Ton energy input cost for the main product Phthalic Anhydride (PA) has reduced from Rs 2511 per MT in 2001 to Rs 593 per MT in 2007, ( ie. from $ 55 to $13 ), inspite of a three fold increase in energy prices in this period: In fixed price terms, a reduction of over 90% in energy costs.
Securing emission reduction from another facility
TCL has set up four 800 kW Windmills at Pushpathur, near Dharapuram in Dindigul district, Tamilnadu. Each unit has a capacity to generate 19 lakh kWh/ year. The machines have been commissioned and have started generating power. This is fed into the general grid and Tamilnadu Electricity Board gives credit for the amount of electricity delivered.
Reduction in water use
In water use reduction, TCL has used recycle, reuse and a number of process changes to reduce water consumption from 16.5 Kilolitres / MT of product in 1998 to 7.4 KL / MT in 2007. The Plant in India, which produces over 100,000 MT / year of 9 products, has reduced treated water discharge from 700 KL / day in 1998, to Zero discharge in 2006, through this process. All water is treated and recycled.
CO2 emission
In the last 6 years we have reduced CO2 emission by 50%
